THE SEMESTER SYSTEM


Drastic and new developments are happening in the field of education as a result of globalization. So, the quality of education has to be made on par with the international standard. Many foreign universities will be entering our nation after 2 or 3 years with whom we need to compete. We should be ready to face the challenges, the Kuvempu University has taken a bold step by introducing the semester system in all its affiliated colleges which come under its jurisdiction. Our college is also committed to the implementation of this semester system.
Instead of 3 Annual Examinations for 3 years Degree course, Six examinations will be conducted for six semesters. Intensive education and study for 4 months, two tests for every semester, internal assessment marks and finally the semester examinations will make the students study seriously. This makes the semester system successful In bringing about the positive result. Undoubtedly, this semester system not only makes our students active and competent but also gives them a privilege to have extensive and intensive study. Besides this system puts an end to the sluggishness that was there in the previous annual examination system. It is hoped that this semester system can create good citizens for the modern life.


Nss and NCC


In addition to the classroom teaching, the college has got a NSS unit and a NCC unit. These units aim at creating awareness about the social responsibilities among the young people. There is a provision for 100 students to get enrolled for the NSS. The NSS conducts an Annual camp for 10 days in a rural area.
Various programmes such as cleaning the area, environmental awareness, blood donation, conservation of ancient monuments, AIDS awareness, awareness about child labour problems and so on are conducted.
Though our college does not have a NCC unit of its own, it has a provision to get its students enrolled for NCC in A.R.G.ARTS and COMMERCE COLLEGE, which is its sister, organization. There it can get 30% admission in that college NCC. Opportunities are given to the NCC cadets to" emerge out as the brave soldiers to safe guard the country and to express their love for the nation. Preference is given at the time of admission to PG courses to those who have taken part in the programmes of NSS and NCC. The NSS provides the students a moral courage. While NCC gives them a physical fitness.


SPORTS DEPARTMENT


The Sports Department in the college caters to the needs of the sports person in indoor games and outdoor games. The students who excel in their performance in sports and games are recognized and encouraged. Proper coaching is given to able sports persons and then the selected sports persons are sent to take part in the inter-collegiate, university and inter-university tournaments. We believe in the concept: "Sound mind in a Sound body". Let this be known to the students that preference is given to the talented sports persons for admission to higher courses and even in employment opportunities.


LIBRARY


About more than 16,000 good books are available in the college library on various subjects like; Kannada, English, Hindi, Urdu in the language section, History, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, Commerce and so on. These books extend the horizon of our" knowledge. Daily News papers which provide current knowledge, periodicals and national journals are available in the library, A student can avail the facility of borrowing two books every fortnight. He can refer books in the reference room and read papers in the reading room during leisure hours. To enable the students to use these faculties, the Library is made accessible and is open on all working days throughout the year.

Truly speaking, library is the "Sanctum-Sanctorum" of the temple of knowledge. Every student should aim to study the
books with devotion.


ACADEMIC and CULTURAL ACTIVITIES


If text-books make us intelligent, cultural activities make us humane. So the college, through various cultural and academic clubs, conducts various activities such as seminars. Essay competitions, Debate contest, Dance, Music, Drama and literary activities. The students are encouraged to take part in these I programs. Thereby the college tries to bring out the hidden talent of the students. The students are motivated to participate in the competitions at the College, University and Inter-University level. Workshops are conducted to draw out the best talent from the academic and cultural performers.


ATTENDANCE


As per the rules and regulations of the Kuvempu University every student must have 75% attendance which as mandatory Those who are actively taking part in the programs and schemes of the college need to have 60% attendance. And those who have got below 60% attendance are not eligible to appear for the examination.


COMMITTEES


Various committees are formed to observe the overall development of the students. The name of each committee and the names of the members are displayed on the notice board. The students are privileged to get counseling and guidance from the committee. Committees like disciplinary committee, the campus committee, the examination committee, the academic activities committee, the library committee, and the sports committee and so on always function.


THE NAGANOOR BASAPPA FOUNDATION FOR THE TALENTED


A foundation by the name 'The Maganoor Basappa Foundation For The Talented" has been instituted in memory of his father by Sri Maganoor Sangameshwara Gowdru, a noted industrialist and the son of late Sri Maganoor Basappa. Interest accrued annually from the fixed deposit, is being used to give away the cash prize to the talented students. Every year, the -students who emerge as rank holders or as toppers in the final B.A. and B.Com courses, are rewarded with the cash prize.


THE BAPUJI EDUCATIONAL ASSOCIATION CASH PRIZE


It has been a worthy tradition of the B.E.A. to honor the rank holders, who studied in any of its branches, by issuing them the cash prize. Like wise, whoever gets, whichever rank of the university in his final B.A. or B.Com, is given Rs. 2001=00 cash prize by our association.


POOR BOYS FUND


Another healthy practice is being followed by the college. A "Poor Boys Fund" came into existence in the year 2005-06. The fund is collected by generous students, parents and old students. The fund is utilised for the sake of poor students, who are really unable to continue their studies or for those who are facing financial crisis. Already more than 40 students are helped. At present Rs. 14,161/-is available with the committee.


SCHOLARSHIPS and FEE CONCESSIONS


All kinds of scholarships and fee concessions as declared by the government, are given by the college. The National Merit Scholarship, Reservation and Fee concession for SC and ST students at the time of admission and also fee concession for the categories I, IIA, IIB, IIIA IIIB are the provisions made as per the government order. The rules are strictly followed in all these matters.


COMPUTER LABORATORY


A well equipped computer laboratory has been established in the college for the 2004-05. There are experienced teachers in computer science. This computer laboratory will be utilized for commerce students and for those who are
in learning computer basics. To fulfill the modern days r>eed ttie
computer lab will be effectively used.
The college has a governing council, consisting of 9 members headed by Sri. Kasal S. Vittal and Governing body consisting of 6 members headed by Sri Maganuru Sangameshwara Gowdru The members of both the bodies stand as a back bone to the college and their valuable, precious advice and suggestions are always a beacon height to the college.


The college has totally 10 departments through which 3 courses are being undertaken. They are in BA- HEP, HPS, B.Com. and B.B.M. These are the main courses which are enabled by various language departments viz., Kannada, English, Hindi and Urdu with their efficient group of lecturers and senior professors.


Faculty details - The college at present is consisting 3 faculties they are mainly Arts, Commerce and Management. Among these faculties nearly 13 full time permanent lecturers are engaged themselves in importing "quality education and also they are joined hands by 12 members of permanent non-teaching staff and guest lecturers who too are enabling students to make use of facilities available in the college.

Admission Procedure - A candidate who has passed the year pre university examination (PUC) conducted by the University Board of Education in the state of Karnataka or any other Examination considered as equivalent there to by the university (Such as SSSE/CBSE) is eligible for admission to the first semester of B.A/B.Sc/B.Com. (Semester Scheme) Degree courses.


The candidate who has passed two year JOC (Vocation Courses)/ three year Diploma courses conducted by the Director of Vocational Education /Technical Education Board are also eligible to join B.A., B.Com., and B.B.M. course. And the candidate who has passed JOC/DipIorna Course in the concerned Science subject is also eligible to join B.Sc. course.
A candidate who has passed the two year diploma in Business Administration conducted by the dept. of Technical Education, Government of Karnataka will be eligible for admission to Third year B.Com. (fifth semester) directly. However the candidate has to pass the first year and second year (first to fourth semester)
